HIS Newsletter
The Central Chapter newsletter has been part of our organization since the beginning. Its purpose is to provide news of trending pest and disease threats affecting our member states, information about emerging tools, technologies, and research that helps us to become better inspectors, and stories about our member events and experiences that enrich our inspection work. The newsletter is issued up to four times per year and is distributed to our current and subscribing members and to the plant pest regulatory administrators affiliated with our organization nationwide. The newsletter is member-supported and welcomes all photo and text submissions of interest to our readership. Past issues have included Horticultural Society news, event and history articles, photography and inspection method tips, industry abstracts and editorials, and announcements of new publications, useful website links, and valuable reference information. |
HIS Inspector's Guide
The idea of a nursery inspector’s guide was conceived at the Founder’s meeting in 1970 to update an old publication that was being utilized by the Central Plant Board (CPB). The first segments were produced in 1976. The idea fully got off the ground in 1984 with the costs being shared 50/50 with the CPB. Inspectors wrote each insect or disease reference and provided color photos. The first printing in 1985 included 165 entries covering 10 pests and was provided to each inspector. In 1991 it was considered complete and was spiral bound. Over the years, additional articles have been added as new pests and diseases have emerged. The manual also includes recommended regulatory actions, and now includes write-ups covering 63 insect and mites, 37 disease and nematodes, and 3 environmental problems. The pest write-ups cover the distribution, description, hosts, damage, life cycle, inspection tips, control tips, related pests, and references. The whole reason behind the manual was to serve as a guide to help produce a more uniform enforcement of plant regulatory laws. Work is currently being done on a revised manual to keep up with current pest and disease issues and trends. Click the link to the right for the order form. |
